When you see a post-40 year old with washboard abs, chances are high that they have had a little help from their cosmetic surgeon. Diet and exercise are always terrific and I am a believer in eating right and staying physically fit. However, when you are in your 20’s and 30’s, diet and exercise are generally enough to keep your stomach flat. By the 40’s, people often reach a weight loss plateau. Or, they lose weight, but inches and fat remain in unwanted areas. For instance, they lose more weight in their face than in their tummy. The Facts: CoolLipo vs. SmartLipo

The Similarities: Both CoolLipo and SmartLipo assist in the removal of obstinate body fat, emulsifying it while conserving fragile tissue and gradually tightening the skin. Both procedures are safe and effective for people of all ages. Both offer minimal downtime and a quick recovery. And finally, both are FDA-approved.

The Differences: The laser used for a CoolLipo procedure generally has a wavelength of 1320, while the SmartLipo laser generally has a wavelength of 1064. SmartLipo uses a dual-platform laser separating the functions for fat removal and skin tightening. CoolLipo uses one laser for both. The CoolLipo laser has a maximum energy output of 15 watts, while the SmartLipo laser has a max of 10 watts. And the CoolLipo laser system is often much more cost-effective for surgeons to buy than SmartLipo, translating into reduced costs for the patient.

SmartLipo was FDA-approved earlier than CoolLipo, making the CoolLipo procedure newer. Think about a car. Is the 2009 model better than the ‘06? Probably. Now on to the laser. The CoolLipo laser with a wavelength of 1320 targets collagen and water within the collagen, tightening the skin. Both melt fat, but the 1064 wavelength of the SmartLipo laser is less effective at targeting the collagen, so the skin will most likely not be as tight. The fact that SmartLipo uses a dual-platform laser could mean a longer recovery time. The more stuff prodded around in there, the more likely it can cause more bruising and swelling. CoolLipo uses one laser head, decreasing downtime. And the difference in watts makes CoolLipo more efficient at lipolysis (melting fat) because of the higher concentration of energy.

Finally to the last point: the SmartLipo laser system is more expensive for surgeons to purchase than the CoolLipo system. Where is the doctor is going to make up the cost? The price that he or she charges you. So, you can pay more for a less advanced procedure, or pay less for the newest innovation in fat removal and skin tightening. Hmmm…

Just posting a note to say that my thoughts are with Usher and his wife during this difficult time. It is extremely rare and unusual that there are complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure. Most often the complications are associated with the general anesthesia — which is one of the key benefits of the Cool Lipo Technology, which requires no general anesthesia. Secondly, it is such a good idea to have cosmetic surgery in the country within which you live. Therefore, should the RARE occassion occur and you need a little extra help, you and your relatives are close to home. Dr. Prasad has just returned from the 25th Anniversary Convention of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons. At the Convention, Dr. Prasad was invited to speak to over 2,500 surgeons from around the world. His topic was the latest advances in Cosmetic Surgery. In addition, Dr. Prasad is featured on a documentary called The History of Plastic Surgery, which will be aired on PBS. The documentary was played as a continuous loop throughout the Convention in Arizona. What does this mean for you? I am grateful to start 2009 with both my loved ones and myself in good health. Yet like many others, I know there are important steps I can take to improve how I look and feel.
