‘Check out the moobs on that guy’

While breast-enhancing surgery has become almost a norm for American women, men are also heading to the plastic surgeon’s office more often — to have their man-boobs (moobs) removed.
That fact shouldn’t be too surprising, considering that each year the obesity epidemic continues to grow. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a study that showed nine states increasing their obesity rates to 30 percent, which is triple the number of states that reported such a high percentage in 2007.
However, hormonal issues can also cause the growth of moobs. A test is required if a hormonal imbalance is a possible cause. Dr. Bill Johnson at Innovations Medical in Dallas, Texas, explains.
“Any man that’s having a discharge from his nipples, that’s definitely a sign that you need to have an evaluation,” he says. “Also, folks that have very large breasts that aren’t particularly overweight or particularly heavy anywhere else.”
THE SURGICAL SOLUTION
Not only are men sporting more cleavage these days — the surgical options to have them removed have been streamlined to the point where the procedure is safer, easier and requires less recovery time.
“The popularity has grown quite a bit in the last two or three years because the tools have gotten better,” adds Dr. Johnson. He says on average, he performs male-breast removal two to four times a month.
“No one would know by looking at them that they ever had a procedure like this. They don’t need to take a lot of time away — just a couple of hours in the afternoon,” adds Dr. Amiya Prasad spokesman for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
Dr. Prasad adds that the surgery generally costs between $5,000 and $15,000, and that quality should never be sacrificed.
